What is RMIS?

The Risk Management and Insurance Society (RMIS) is a professional society at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  The group, which includes both undergraduate and graduate students, fosters educational opportunities outside the classroom and promotes relationship building between students, faculty, and industry professionals.

RMIS, which is not affiliated with a national fraternity, is the oldest risk management and insurance collegiate society in the country.

Programs

To achieve its goals, RMIS sponsors a number of different programs throughout the academic year. These may include:

  • Speaker Series:
    • Each semester RMIS invites leaders in the risk management and insurance profession to address the group on issues of current importance and practical significance. Topics have included discussions of litigation management, claims administration, and risk management consulting, to name a few.  Approximately 8-10 speakers address the group each year.  The talks, which last for about a half hour, are typically scheduled around noon. RMIS provides lunch to the members attending the discussion.
  • CPCU Mentoring Program:
    • RMIS has partnered with the Madison CPCU Chapter to create a mentoring program for interested students.  Industry professionals who are members of CPCU are paired with students who seek a mentor.  Mentors can be a valuable resource in helping the student more fully understand the risk management and insurance profession.
  • Spring Banquet:
    • Each spring RMIS sponsors a banquet to honor graduating seniors.  The banquet is also an opportunity to thank those industry professionals who have contributed to the success of the Risk Management and Insurance Program at the UW-Madison during the past year.
  • Field Trips:
    • During a typical year RMIS members will visit insurance companies and attend meetings of professional societies. In the past semesters RMIS members visited the  American Family Insurance Company and met with the Dairyland CPCU Chapter.
  • CPCU Exams:
    • Members of RMIS, who successfully pass a CPCU exam that corresponds to a risk management and insurance course they've taken, are eligible to receive a $100 reimbursement.
  • Social Events:
    • RMIS has sponsored a variety of different social events in recent years.  These have included attending a hockey game in Milwaukee, a tour of coffee houses in Madison, and bowling in Middleton.  Social events are planned to be of interest to as many RMIS members as possible.  Events differ from year to year reflecting the changing interests of the student members.
